A victim recently shared a disturbing account on Twitter about narrowly avoiding a sophisticated cryptocurrency scam involving a fake NFT game called MythIsland. The elaborate scheme started when the scammers contacted the victim about a Solidity developer job opportunity for MythIsland, a supposed Web3 game with NFTs and in-game economies.
The scammers went to great lengths to make MythIsland look legitimate – they created an impressive website with graphics and working links, presented a seemingly transparent and verified team, and transitioned the conversation from Twitter to Telegram. Eventually, they prompted the victim to download a game launcher executable from the website.
However, the victim wisely decided to install antivirus software first. When trying to register on the launcher, an error message popped up. The “team” suggested trying it on another Windows computer, raising the victim’s suspicions. At that point, the scammers suddenly erased all communication and blocked the victim everywhere.
It became clear they were fraudsters looking to drain the victim’s cryptocurrency wallet, cutting ties when realizing they wouldn’t profit. While no funds were lost, the experience left the victim’s laptop compromised. He advised others to be very cautious of this wallet-draining technique disguised as a job opportunity and game.
