Israel: Hamas Plotted Attack on Sweden Embassy

Israel alleged the militant Palestinian group Hamas orchestrated plans to attack its embassy in Sweden as Hamas purportedly spreads more activity into Europe. This charge follows multiple arrests of suspected Hamas members across Europe that authorities revealed last month.

While Hamas denied running operations beyond Israel and Palestinian territories historically, Israel’s intelligence agency Mossad accused a named Sweden-based Hamas figure of involvement in the foiled plot. Swedish officials declined specifics around the embassy’s security.

Mossad said the Hamas network took direction from Lebanon and intended the Sweden embassy attack to include procuring paragliders while activating European criminal groups as well. The statement connected tactics to Hamas’ October 7th multifaceted surprise attack on Israel utilizing paragliders.

Details remain vague surrounding the suspected embassy scheme and expansion. But Israeli authorities are doubling down on Hamas’ desire to extend its violent activities deeper into Europe. For a region proud of open borders, additional militant cells would represent a nightmare scenario.

Ongoing investigations around the arrests will likely uncover more of Hamas’ aims, coordination and foiled plans intended for European soil. But this initial warning from Israeli intelligence should prompt tightened security awareness from Sweden to beyond.
