UN Demands Houthis End Attacks on Red Sea Shipping

The UN Security Council passed a resolution telling the Houthi rebels in Yemen to stop attacking ships in the Red Sea. The US and allies have ships patrolling there to try to stop attacks. The Houthis just did their biggest ever missile and drone attack on shipping, which the US and UK navies shot down in a big naval battle.

Last week the US and 12 other countries said the Houthis need to immediately stop the attacks, warning they would take collective action if it continues. The US said the Houthis will be responsible for the consequences if they keep threatening lives, the economy, and shipping.

The US ambassador said if Houthi attacks continue, there will be consequences. The US knows Iran helps plan the Houthi attacks. It isn’t looking for a fight with Iran, but said Iran can choose to keep helping the Houthis or not, without which the Houthis would struggle to hit ships.

Right before voting, Russia’s amendments trying to blame Gaza and say it doesn’t set a precedent were overwhelmingly rejected. The US and UK voted against them.

Russia said the resolution was politicized and just legitimizes the US-led coalition’s actions. The amendments tried to say Gaza escalation caused this and the resolution doesn’t set a precedent.

The US accused Russia of proposing amendments in bad faith to embolden the Houthis. The resolution demands the Houthis release a Japanese ship they seized. It confirms countries can defend vessels from Houthi attacks.

It condemns giving the Houthis weapons violating UN sanctions. It calls for cooperation to stop the Houthis getting weapons for more attacks.

The resolution urges caution to avoid escalating things more. It encourages diplomacy and support for Yemen’s peace process.
