A fake version of the open-source cryptocurrency wallet Rabby Wallet has appeared in Apple’s App Store, marking the latest incident of scammers impersonating legitimate crypto products.
According to an announcement from the official Rabby Wallet team, this is not the first time imposters have tried to mimic their wallets. Rabby emphasized they currently do not have an official mobile app, directing users to a previous warning they posted back in October about a similar scam app.
The fake Rabby app was created by an entity called “Dinh Thi Phuonh Dung” which has no other apps published. The privacy policy links to a sham website, showing the fraudulent nature of the app. Worryingly, it appears first when searching for “Rabby Wallet” in the App Store, raising concerns about Apple’s vetting process.
Real Rabby Wallet is currently only available as a Chrome extension and desktop application. The project website notes a mobile app is in development but not officially released yet.
This incident highlights the ongoing issue of fake crypto apps being used to trick victims into sending money or compromising login credentials. Last month a fake Ledger Live app stole $588,000 in Bitcoin after infiltrating the Microsoft app store.
Crypto users need to be vigilant about only using trusted sources to download wallets and double checking URLs and developer names to avoid falling victim to these increasingly sophisticated phishing scams.
