The regulatory body overseeing innovation projects in Uzbekistan, the National Agency for Perspective Projects (NAPP), has released new rules for cryptocurrency mining in the country.
According to the decree, only registered companies are allowed to engage in crypto mining – individuals cannot operate mines. This follows previous government directives that prohibited local residents from cryptocurrency transactions and mining.
The NAPP states that solar power should be the main energy source for mining operations, though the national power grid can also be used under certain unspecific conditions. Mining equipment must be housed in dedicated spaces registered with the companies.
The agency restricts the type of cryptocurrencies that can be mined. For example, privacy coins like Monero are prohibited. Companies must obtain all required licenses and permits from the NAPP before starting mining activities. The NAPP urges compliance with regulations and licensing requirements.
The government has issued similar decrees before, so it’s unclear if this represents the definitive framework for cryptocurrency mining in Uzbekistan going forward.
