Brazil Implements Blockchain for National Digital ID System

The Brazilian government recently announced the rollout of a new national digital identification program built on blockchain technology. Over 214 million citizens will soon have access to blockchain-based digital IDs.

The states of Rio de Janeiro, Goiás, and Paraná will be the first to issue identification documents through a private blockchain developed by Serpro, Brazil’s national data processing service. By November 6th, the entire country is expected to have the ability to provide digital IDs via blockchain.

Serpro president Alexandre Amorim touted blockchain’s decentralized and immutable nature as ideal for securing personal data and preventing fraud within the digital ID system. The b-Cadastros blockchain platform will enhance the security and reliability of the project, according to Amorim.

The nationwide digital identification initiative aims to combat organized crime, simplify access to government services, and streamline administrative records. It follows a similar digital ID wallet program launched in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Over the past few years, Brazil has worked to unify identity issuance across its nearly 30 states. The blockchain technology will enable more secure data exchange between government entities like the Federal Revenue department.

The adoption of blockchain digital IDs represents a major step in Brazil’s development of digital government services. With over 214 million citizens set to receive blockchain-based identity documents, it stands as one of the largest rollouts of blockchain identity technology by a national government to date.
