Iconic pop artist Keith Haring’s early digital drawings created on a Commodore Amiga in 1987 will be auctioned as NFTs by Christie’s. The artworks were provided by the Keith Haring Foundation.
Christie’s “Keith Haring: Pixel Pioneer” sale will feature 5 of Haring’s digital pieces, accessible only via floppy disk previously. Bidding on the Ethereum NFTs runs September 12-20, with estimates from $220,000 to $500,000 each.
Haring was an innovator who bridged pop art and street art with traditional galleries. He was known for his repetitive figurative shapes in bold colors outlined in black. Haring continued making public street art despite his fame.
The Amiga drawings capture Haring’s pioneering digital art experiments. Christie’s and the Foundation hope the historic NFT auction will unite crypto art and physical art worlds.
According to the Foundation, Haring used the Amiga computer gifted by psychologist Timothy Leary. The NFTs were minted in collaboration with Digital Practice and Artestar.
Haring passed away in 1990 at age 31 due to AIDS complications. His mantra of “art for everybody” drove his boundary-pushing works across mediums and genres.
As an early digital art adopter, Haring’s Amiga drawings represent an important milestone in his innovative career. The upcoming auction offers a rare glimpse into this seminal moment through NFT technology.
