New NFL video game offers in-game NFT purchases on iOS and Android

NFL Rivals, a licensed NFL mobile game by Mythical Games, now enables in-app purchases of NFT player cards on iOS and Android. This new feature, launched Thursday, was previously limited to Mythical’s web marketplace. It follows Google updating Play Store policies to allow NFT buying within Android apps.

In NFL Rivals, users at level 4+ can tap “Improve My Roster” and buy recommended NFT cards to boost their team. For now, it only shows tailored suggestions, not the full NFT marketplace catalog. Over the next few months, Mythical Games plans to test different in-app marketplace integrations, eventually letting users buy and sell NFTs directly through the game.

Currently, selling NFTs and browsing all listings still requires a Mythical website. However, purchased NFTs are stored in a user’s Mythical account, connected to NFL Rivals to activate the NFTs’ utility in-game. To buy NFTs in-app, players need Credits, an in-game currency bought with real money. This approach mirrors move-to-earn game Stepn but with consistent NFT prices. Since its April soft launch, the free-to-play NFL Rivals has surpassed 2 million downloads ahead of its official worldwide release before the 2023 NFL season.
