Meet the Company Building AI Jets for U.S. Military

Kratos Defense is developing unmanned fighter jets that use artificial intelligence, like the XQ-58A Valkyrie. This experimental stealth jet first flew without a human pilot in 2019 and recently flew in formation with Air Force planes. Kratos says the Valkyrie can operate as a “loyal wingman” conducting combat and surveillance alongside manned jets in dangerous situations.

Originally a telecom company, Kratos rebranded in 2007 to provide services to the Department of Defense. They tapped an AI developer to integrate advanced intelligence into the Valkyrie to enhance its capabilities as an affordable option for the military. Kratos claims their AI jets will transform aerial combat tactics and provide advantages over rivals also pursuing this technology.

While autonomous weapons have raised ethical issues, Kratos states they follow all defense protocols for unmanned systems. The company aims to balance manned and unmanned missions while emphasizing cost-savings. Kratos strives to rapidly develop cutting-edge yet affordable AI drones to pioneer the future of air warfare for the armed forces. They believe their focus on real products instead of concepts has positioned them for success in the current budgetary and global environment.
