Several individuals in Alabama, United States, tragically lost their lives when they participated in a dangerous TikTok challenge that involved leaping off the back of a swiftly moving boat.
According to state officials, all four individuals suffered instantaneous fatalities as a result of neck injuries.
The TikTok trend involves individuals leaping off the rear of a fast-moving boat, landing feet first. Participants may either face away from the water or perform backflips during their jumps.
Captain Jim Dennis, from the Childersburg Rescue Squad in Alabama, told WPDE-TV “(In the) last six months, we have had four drownings that were easily avoidable.”
“They were doing a TikTok challenge. The four that we responded to, when they jumped out of the boat, they broke their necks and… basically an instant death,” he said.
“I think people if they’re being filmed on camera, I think they’re more likely to do something stupid because they want to show off in front of their friends for social media,” he added.
In February, Captain Dennis shared that one of the incidents took place. A middle-aged man, accompanied by his wife and three children, tragically lost his life while attempting the challenge. Disturbingly, his wife was documenting his actions by filming him as he jumped off the boat.
According to WPDE-TV, the most recent occurrence took place in May, once again involving a middle-aged man.
WPDE-TV reported that the other two individuals who lost their lives engaging in the TikTok challenge were also male.
In the past, there have been additional TikTok challenges that have resulted in fatalities.
In the month of May, a teenage girl from France lost her life while participating in the popular “scarf game,” which is a modified version of TikTok’s dangerous “blackout challenge” that has already caused multiple fatalities.
The risky quest entails wrapping a rag over one’s neck and asphyxiating themselves until they pass out for purported Internet clout.
Sadly, similar to the “blackout challenge,” this exploit can reduce the amount of oxygen reaching the brain, leading to convulsions, severe injury, and even death.
Meanwhile, the “Benadryl challenge” claimed the lives of two teenagers.
The majority of the time, it involves kids who repeatedly take antihistamines to create hallucinations before releasing films of their experiences.
