On April 30th, a survey in Japan revealed that 69.4% of people favor a more monitored approach to AI’s progress. Additionally, Kyodo News research showed fear of further proliferation of AI chatbot systems amongst citizens.
As part of their larger study, a poll was conducted to gauge public opinion concerning a variety of topics such as acceptance ratings of government figures and pandemic-related events. Subsequently, leaders from Japan’s government voiced support for OpenAI – an organization that developed ChatGPT – which led to incorporating AI into their systems. On April 10th, Hirokazu Matsuno, Chief Cabinet Secretary for Japan, stated that this would be done only once considerations about safety and privacy were properly addressed.
Japan is pushing for an environment in the crypto and Web3 industries that is more favorable to innovation. Recently, a white paper was released called “Ways to Expand the Local Crypto Scene” by those involved with the nation’s Web3 effort.
Governments have shown considerable interest in regulating artificial intelligence (AI), with one of them deciding to put a temporary ban on ChatGPT. Meanwhile, German watchdogs are conducting their own investigation to see whether or not ChatGPT conforms to General Data Protection Regulations. Additionally, EU legislators are finalizing an Artificial Intelligence Act designed to be employed as an example by other countries.
In response to the fast-paced development of AI, China has taken drastic measures by mandating security checks for both AI businesses and their products. This inspection process is soon to be put in place.
Given its global implications, it’s no surprise that AI chatbots have sparked meaningful discourse in Japan and beyond. While these bots may offer innovative solutions to various areas, it is paramount that their development abides by ethical standards and applicable regulations. This will ensure a higher level of privacy and security for all individuals involved.
