In a groundbreaking move, Toulouse’s public transport operator Tisséo has introduced cryptocurrency payments for its transit services, marking a significant milestone in European urban mobility. Starting March 17, 2025, passengers can now purchase tickets via the Tisséo Android mobile app, with the ability to convert bitcoin and over 70 other cryptocurrencies to euros instantaneously. The system, developed through partnerships with fintech firm Lyzi and exchange platform Binance, offers a single ticket for approximately 0.000024 BTC (€1.80), with options for multi-ride passes and subscriptions.
The initiative reflects France’s growing cryptocurrency adoption, with 18% of residents owning digital assets in 2024 according to Gemini research. Accepted cryptocurrencies include bitcoin, ethereum, XRP, solana, and USDT, providing users with unprecedented flexibility in payment methods. However, the program is not without challenges. Users must navigate complex tax reporting requirements, declaring transactions on form 3916-bis, and the Android-only availability potentially limits accessibility for iOS users.
Toulouse’s crypto payment system draws inspiration from successful implementations in Argentina, where 37 cities adopted crypto transit payments by 2019. Finance head Sacha Briand emphasizes the move as part of broader modernization efforts, building on the 2023 introduction of credit card payments on buses. While the initiative highlights the potential for digital currencies in public services, regulatory and technical hurdles may slow widespread adoption. Nonetheless, the experiment represents a bold step towards integrating cryptocurrency into everyday urban infrastructure, potentially paving the way for similar initiatives across Europe.
