Hong Kong to Host Bitcoin Conference

Hong Kong has secured hosting duties for the world’s largest Bitcoin-focused event, The Bitcoin Conference, as the city affirms its aspirations as a global blockchain and cryptocurrency leader.

Local lawmaker Johnny Ng celebrated the news by pledging Hong Kong will “paint the city orange” when the influential event targeting the top minds in crypto arrives May 9-10 at the city’s premier Kai Tak Cruise Terminal venue.

The conference will convene regulators, innovators, and industry experts from around the world to discuss critical themes like regulatory frameworks for navigating the rapid emergence of digital assets. Discussions around blockchain applications beyond cryptocurrency will also take center stage.

On the regulatory front, Councilman Ng urged Hong Kong to take after the United States by expediting the approval process for Bitcoin spot ETFs. Ng emphasized Hong Kong must lean into virtual asset innovation before Asian rivals beat them to the punch.

His calls come after Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission and Hong Kong Monetary Authority issued new guidance for investment vehicles like spot crypto ETFs back in December – signaling a commitment to fostering growth.

By locking down Bitcoin 2023’s marquee industry event, Hong Kong solidifies its positioning among the foremost cryptocurrency hubs in Asia amidst rising competition. Securing the meeting and hosting thousands of crypto’s best and brightest further cement the city’s reputation as the gateway between East and West in the virtual asset economy.
