Global Bitcoin ATM Installations See First Decline in a Decade

For the first time in 10 years, the number of installed Bitcoin ATMs worldwide decreased in 2023, falling 11% from 37,827 at the start of 2023 to 33,622 at the start of 2024.

In the United States, which accounts for 82% of global Bitcoin ATMs, the number also declined from 32,672 to 27,621 throughout 2023 – the first-ever year-over-year drop in the US.

Although the US and global numbers fell overall, adoption rose in some regions like the EU, Canada, Australia, Spain, and Poland, while Switzerland saw a notable decrease.

Other areas have also increased Bitcoin adoption through ATMs, like Argentina and El Salvador with Lightning-enabled machines.

The all-time high for global Bitcoin ATMs was 39,376 in August 2022. Currently, the largest operator is Bitcoin Depot in the US with over 6,300 machines, ahead of CoinFlip’s 3,880.

In summary, after a decade of growth, global Bitcoin ATM installations saw their first-ever decline in 2023, driven by a drop in the dominant US market. But, other regions continue to see increasing adoption.
