Global Bitcoin ATM Installations See First Decline in a Decade

For the first time in 10 years, the number of installed itcoin">Bitcoin ATMs worldwide decreased in 2023, falling 11% from 37,827 at the start of 2023 to 33,622 at the start of 2024.

In the United States, which accounts for 82% of global itcoin">Bitcoin ATMs, the number also declined from 32,672 to 27,621 throughout 2023 – the first-ever year-over-year drop in the US.

Although the US and global numbers fell overall, adoption rose in some regions like the EU, Canada, Australia, Spain, and Poland, while Switzerland saw a notable decrease.

Other areas have also increased itcoin">Bitcoin adoption through ATMs, like Argentina and El Salvador with Lightning-enabled machines.

The all-time high for global itcoin">Bitcoin ATMs was 39,376 in August 2022. Currently, the largest operator is itcoin">Bitcoin Depot in the US with over 6,300 machines, ahead of CoinFlip’s 3,880.

In summary, after a decade of growth, global itcoin">Bitcoin ATM installations saw their first-ever decline in 2023, driven by a drop in the dominant US market. But, other regions continue to see increasing adoption.
