Expansion of Cryptocurrency ATMs Coming to New Zealand

A large international cryptocurrency kiosk company called Olliv is bringing its network of crypto ATMs to New Zealand. Founded in 2015, the American company already has over 4000 kiosks set up globally. They have recently established 10 machines in New Zealand, with plans to install up to 100 more across the country.

Olliv’s Australian director Matt Pook says New Zealand is an attractive market because of the current lack of crypto availability. Surveys show that 1 in 10 Kiwis now have crypto holdings. Previous attempts by local companies to launch crypto ATMs have not lasted.

University of Auckland professor Alex Sims notes operational challenges for NZ crypto businesses, like getting bank accounts, and thinks more should be done to encourage homegrown companies in this space. However, she says overseas providers like Olliv have the advantage of not needing local banking.

Pook emphasizes Olliv’s focus on customer safety and compliance. Their self-custody model gives users full control over their funds. They utilize the same monitoring systems as major banks to watch for suspicious transactions.

The main goal is to make crypto more easily accessible for New Zealanders. The expansion aims to bring this new financial technology to people across the country.
