The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met) in New York City has collaborated with gaming platform Roblox to provide an interactive virtual experience aimed at young audiences.
Through the partnership, Roblox users can obtain digital copies of famous Met artifacts and artworks, like Van Gogh’s straw hat, to dress their avatars. These virtual clothing items and accessories can be unlocked using Replica, an augmented reality app with quests guiding users through The Met’s galleries.
By scanning chosen art pieces within Replica, people can import digital wearables into their Roblox inventories. A digital recreation of The Met will also exist in Roblox, letting users explore virtual rooms like the Great Hall.
“With Replica, we could utilize technology to connect with younger art enthusiasts in an environment they enjoy,” said The Met’s Senior VP Ken Weine.
Users can curate exhibits by mixing digital artifact pieces and taking avatar photos against historical backdrops.
The Met’s metaverse efforts mirror other museums adopting virtual experiences, like the British Museum launching its own realm and NFTs in The Sandbox.
In wider metaverse news, startup Futureverse recently secured $54 million to expand its crypto and gaming presence.
The Met partnership demonstrates how museums can leverage platforms like Roblox to engage younger audiences. Virtual quests and digital artifacts provide interactive and immersive art experiences in metaverse environments.
