A tragic mid-air collision between two light aircraft at Caboolture Airfield in Australia has resulted in the deaths of a couple in their 60s. The two planes crashed around 10:30am on Friday morning in what police described as a “significant incident.”
According to Inspector Paul Ready, the aircraft were believed to be near the ground, potentially taking off, when the collision occurred. The deceased couple were together in one of the planes, while a sole 70-year-old man was in the second plane.
Paul Ready stated that the couple’s plane was taking off from the eastern end of the airfield when the catastrophic crash happened. An investigation is underway into the circumstances surrounding how the two low-flying planes came into fatal contact at the airfield.
The sole occupant of the second plane involved in the mid-air collision suffered no major injuries. He is cooperating with investigators to piece together exactly what transpired in the crash that claimed two lives.
Inspector Ready described the man’s survival as “probably quite lucky” given the extensive damage on the ground. He also called the loss of life devastating.
Senior Operations Supervisor Matthew Davis said the tragic scene was “incredibly confronting” for first responders and the victims’ families.
Paramedics who attended will be offered counseling. It’s believed one aircraft was being towed when the collision occurred, scattering debris across the runway.
The privately owned planes were registered to individuals and a gliding company. Police are urging any witnesses on the highway to come forward as the investigation continues into how the planes fatally collided. The airfield is closed for now as authorities work to determine the cause of the mid-air crash.
