It’s Official: Elon Musk Announces Twitter Logo Will Morph Into ‘X’ On Friday

Elon Musk verified on Sunday that Twitter’s logo will be altered to the letter ‘X’ on Monday. This comes after he tweeted earlier that day about soon bidding farewell to Twitter’s current branding. The ‘X’ logo represents Musk’s proposed “everything app” that he has envisioned creating.

Elon Musk joined a Twitter Spaces audio chat at the invitation of a Twitter Blue subscriber named Greg. When Greg asked Musk if he was truly changing the Twitter logo, Musk simply replied “Yes” to confirm that the logo change will happen.

In response to being asked why the logo change is occurring now, Elon Musk said “It should have been done a long time ago. Sorry, it took so long.”

He further elaborated “We’re cutting the Twitter logo off the building with blow torches. Well, it’s got to come off somehow, really – it’s more dramatic that way.”

Elon Musk nonchalantly confirmed the Twitter logo change while gaming and not drinking soda. This announcement follows Musk previously requesting logo ideas containing the letter ‘X’ from his followers.

He justified his fondness for the letter X by posting a picture of himself posing in an ‘X’ shape with his arms spread wide in front of a Tesla logo.

The letter ‘X’ represents the name of Musk’s envisioned “super app” similar to China’s WeChat. This messaging, social media, and payments application are what Musk seeks to emulate in the West, a vision also shared by Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

As Musk stated on a podcast, WeChat is an all-in-one platform that combines features of Twitter, PayPal, and more for Chinese users. He aims to create a comparable multifunctional app outside of China.

Regarding payments, Musk has been actively obtaining money transmitter licenses. His appointment of Linda Yaccarino as Twitter’s CEO in May was aimed at transitioning Twitter into X.

Today, Musk requested logo ideas from Twitter users, stating a good X logo posted tonight could go live globally the next day. Many serious and joking submissions responded to his challenge. Musk seemed to choose a logo from Sawyer Merritt, who credited his podcast co-host Alex Tourville as the designer.

According to Platformer’s managing editor Zoe Schiffer, Elon Musk also emailed Twitter employees confirming the logo alteration.

This is not the first time Musk has modified Twitter’s logo. In late 2022, he briefly changed it to the Shiba Inu dog representing the Dogecoin cryptocurrency.

That change caused a 20% increase in the token’s price but also prompted an ongoing $258 billion class action lawsuit accusing Musk of racketeering and insider trading.
