Solana Labs, the company founded by the creators of the Solana blockchain, has launched GameShift. This software enables game developers to integrate various crypto apps when building games on Solana or porting games to Solana.
Solana Labs unveiled GameShift exclusively to Decrypt during the Solana gaming event PlayGG held Wednesday in San Diego.
The objective of GameShift, an API connecting software to Solana, is to provide game developers with a straightforward method for integrating blockchain functionality that enables ownership within video games.
Blockchains such as Solana allow players to possess in-game assets as NFTs and trade them on marketplaces. In contrast, traditional video games like Fortnite and Roblox operate as closed ecosystems or “walled gardens” where players cannot transfer purchased in-game items externally.
As stated by Solana Labs Head of Product Tal Tchwella, “Developers for Web3 games need innovative technology to simplify and accelerate the game building process, which GameShift will accomplish. GameShift is building the ownership layer for games, and will provide a one-stop shop for developers on Solana helping them build faster and more confidently.”
GameShift will provide solutions for NFT/crypto custody, game marketplaces, inventory management, NFT minting, credit card integrations, and more.
According to Tchwella, developers recognize the potential of Web3 gaming but require assistance navigating the currently disjointed landscape of Web3 tools and systems.
Solana Labs’ GameShift arrives as other crypto companies seek to streamline blockchain game creation and attract traditional game developers and studios.
Recently, Justin Kan’s Fractal launched FStudio to facilitate crypto integration for game developers. Also, Ava Labs announced Avalanche Arcad3 to connect game creators with crypto companies.
Solana Labs plans a full GameShift release this year, but developers can register now for early access on their website.
