OpenAI to Launch AI App Store

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, revealed plans for an AI app store at a May conference with developers in London. The store may compete with some of OpenAI’s clients and business partners in technology, such as Salesforce and Microsoft.

The makers of these models could potentially sell them to other businesses through OpenAI’s upcoming marketplace. According to the news report, companies that use ChatGPT technology frequently customize it to meet their unique needs, such as identifying online financial fraud or offering market insights based on internal data.

Reuters reported that Aquant and Khan Academy, two OpenAI clients, would be interested in putting ChatGPT-backed AI models up for sale on the app store. If the business decides to charge a commission on paid downloads, as Google and Apple do on their app stores, OpenAI’s marketplace app store may grow into a sizable revenue stream.

The two primary sources of income for OpenAI at the moment are a $20 monthly subscription fee for ChatGPT Plus subscribers as well as open access to its APIs for various AI models.

By only enabling clients to list the ChatGPT-supported models on their marketplace and excluding all other distribution channels, OpenAI may decide to adopt an approach similar to that of Big Tech’s app stores.

If the new platform uses a similar business model, there may be concerns about competition with Apple’s App Store or Google’s Play Store. OpenAI would probably need to give developers the necessary support tools if it were to mandate that only users sell on its app store.

Altman has stated that ChatGPT and other AI tools urgently require regulation and has called for the participation of US courts.

He also told the US Senate Committee on May 17, 2023, “Certainly companies like ours bear a lot of responsibility for the tools that we put out in the world, but tool users do as well.”

At the moment, spam and unlawful apps are prevented from existing on Google and Apple’s platforms. Particularly in response to Altman’s comments regarding how important it is to regulate AI technologies, OpenAI would have to moderate the platform, preventing the spread of spam and illicit applications.
