Japan Airlines and advertising agency Hakuhodo have formed a partnership to create a collection of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) that will be released in February 2024. The goal of the “KOKYO NFT” project is to turn unique experiences from different regions of Japan into digital assets.
The partners aim to build a sense of global community around the NFT launch. By digitizing art and real estate into NFTs, they hope to create a virtual space that connects people regardless of geography. An origami-themed advertising campaign will allow people to interact with the NFTs by completing tasks that help them grow. Early access to purchase the collection will be granted to those who finish the tasks.
While Japan Airlines will oversee planning for the services involved, Hakuhodo will handle production. Other companies will also contribute to parts of the collaborative project. Hakuhodo’s statement expressed a commitment to exploring the potential to foster connected communities and address Japan’s declining population through experimental demonstrations.
The NFT platform is built on the Ethereum blockchain and follows the lead of ANA, Japan’s largest airline group, which launched its own NFT trading platform last year. ANA’s platform has tokenized works by a flight photographer, 3D airplane models, and generative pixel art called Airbits. Although Japan was previously seen as unfavorable for crypto firms due to high taxes and strict regulations, the government has begun revising taxation and rules in response to crypto companies leaving the country.
