King Charles III Diagnosed with Cancer

King Charles III has been diagnosed with an unspecified form of cancer, Buckingham Palace announced. The cancer is not prostate cancer but was discovered during recent treatment for an enlarged prostate. The 75-year-old King began regular cancer treatments on Monday and will postpone public duties during treatment.

The Palace statement said Charles remains “wholly positive” about the treatment and looks forward to resuming full duties soon. No details were provided on the cancer stage or prognosis.

Charles informed both Prince William and Prince Harry about the diagnosis. Harry, who lives in the US, will travel to the UK to see his father in the next few days.

Although pausing public events, Charles will continue private meetings and constitutional duties as head of state. This includes his weekly audiences with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

The King chose to announce his cancer publicly since he has long supported cancer charities. Recently he brought awareness to prostate screenings. Medical experts thanked him for highlighting how cancer is indiscriminate and encouraged eligible people to get screenings.

World leaders like Biden and Sunak wished Charles a full recovery. Biden related to his own family’s experiences with cancer.

Charles became King in September 2022 after his mother Queen Elizabeth II’s death. His coronation was in May 2023. Plans for upcoming royal tours abroad this year remain unconfirmed given the treatment schedule.
