Animoca Brands Japan taps industry veteran as new COO

Animoca Brands Japan, a subsidiary of leading Web3 investor Animoca Brands, has appointed industry veteran Kensuke Amo as its new chief operating officer. The company said Amo’s appointment will help drive its growth in the strategic Japanese market.

Amo joins Animoca Brands Japan from cryptocurrency exchange Coincheck, where he most recently served as managing executive officer. At Coincheck, Amo led the company’s NFT and new crypto asset businesses.

In a statement, Amo said he will leverage Animoca’s global network and portfolio of over 400 companies to help establish Web3 in Japan. Animoca Brands Japan was formed in 2021 to support Japanese IP and content holders to expand globally into Web3.

The appointment comes as Animoca looks to capitalize on growing interest in Web3 and blockchain-based gaming in Japan. In June 2022, the company received an undisclosed investment from major Japanese trading firm Mitsui & Co. It has also partnered with Cool Cats Group to enter the Japanese anime market.

Animoca Brands Japan CEO Daisuke Iwase said Amo’s veteran experience in crypto, NFTs, and the metaverse made him an ideal choice for COO amid the maturation of the Web3 space in Japan.

With Amo’s appointment, Animoca Brands Japan appears positioned to continue driving mainstream adoption of Web3 in the world’s third-largest economy.
