Shanghai Targets Blockchain Infrastructure by 2025

The city of Shanghai has announced a new initiative to develop blockchain-based digital infrastructure over the next two years. Unveiled on July 31st, Shanghai’s plan aims to promote blockchain adoption across the city’s economy, public services, and governance systems.

According to the announcement, Shanghai has already made significant progress in blockchain innovation, fostering a thriving ecosystem of companies advancing core blockchain technologies and standards. The city now seeks to leverage these advancements to implement blockchain solutions at scale.

By 2025, Shanghai expects to have a comprehensive blockchain infrastructure system supporting a wide array of municipal, public service, and industrial applications. The city also intends for its blockchain infrastructure to facilitate coordination with the broader Yangtze River Delta region and establish Shanghai as an international blockchain hub.

With this new plan, Shanghai joins a growing list of major cities pursuing large-scale blockchain adoption. The initiative demonstrates Shanghai’s commitment to becoming a global leader in advanced digital infrastructure and services.

Chinese cities are rapidly implementing emerging technologies like the metaverse, blockchain, and digital currency. In May, Nanjing launched a metaverse innovation platform to spearhead nationwide R&D. Around the same time, Zhengzhou introduced policies to support metaverse companies.

China is also aggressively developing its central bank digital currency, known as the digital yuan. In July, the city of Jinan pushed adoption by enabling digital yuan payments on all bus routes.

These developments showcase China’s efforts to prepare its major cities as hubs for technological innovation. By advancing metaverse, blockchain, and digital currency initiatives in urban centers, China aims to gain a competitive edge in developing and deploying new digital infrastructure nationwide.

Major metropolitan areas like Nanjing, Zhengzhou, and Jinan are serving as testbeds for rolling out ambitious digital transformation projects across the country. With cities pioneering these technologies, China seeks to establish itself as a global leader in emerging digital economies.
