Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport received a bomb threat on Thursday demanding a Bitcoin ransom. An anonymous email sent to the airport’s feedback inbox threatened to detonate explosives at Terminal 2 unless $1 million in Bitcoin was paid within 48 hours.
The threatening message was received by Mumbai International Airport Limited at approximately 11:06 am. In response, security was heightened across the airport.
Local police have filed a case against the unknown sender, initiating an investigation. As per reports, the airport executive who received the email said “The mail threatened to blow up the airport within 48 hours if the ransom was not paid.”
Authorities are working to trace the IP address used to send the threat in order to identify the perpetrator. The cybercrime division is actively tracking down the source.
A case has been registered under extortion and public alarm sections of the Indian Penal Code. Officials remain focused on protecting travelers while tracing the individual responsible for the communication. The airport continues to remain on high alert as the situation develops.
