ChatGPT Maker OpenAI Under Scrutiny for False Information

OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT, is currently the subject of an investigation by the American competition watchdog. The business is accused of breaking the law by spreading false and defamatory statements using public data.

The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has asked OpenAI in a 20-page letter for specific information about its technology and privacy protections, including any steps taken to prevent a recurrence of incidents in which its ground-breaking chatbot published false and disparaging information about members of the public.

The “expansive” investigation was originally covered by The Washington Post on Thursday.

In response to the leak of the regulator’s investigation, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, expressed disappointment and emphasized that it would not contribute to building trust. Altman took to Twitter to highlight the rigorous safety research and continuous enhancement efforts that went into developing GPT-4, the advanced successor to ChatGPT. He stated that OpenAI dedicated over six months to improving its safety measures and alignment before its release.

He said, “We protect user privacy and design our systems to learn about the world, not private individuals. We’re transparent about the limitations of our technology, especially when we fall short.”

The investigation by the FTC signifies a significant regulatory step toward regulating the emerging field of artificial intelligence. As AI continues to make rapid progress, it has garnered both enthusiasm and concerns regarding potential risks to humanity. This FTC investigation is seen as a robust effort to address these challenges.

The FTC’s chair, Lina Khan, informed a congressional committee on Wednesday that the agency was worried about “fraud and deception” related to ChatGPT’s output. Without mentioning the FTC investigation, Khan said, “We’ve heard about libel, defamatory statements, flatly untrue things that are emerging.”

OpenAI’s ChatGPT gained attention for its realistic human speech but also faced controversy for producing inaccurate and offensive content. Global regulators are developing AI rules as tech firms release more advanced versions. The US Senate considers bipartisan AI bills while the European Union reaches a preliminary deal on AI legislation categorizing risk levels.
