Grammy Awards Limits AI Recognition to ‘Meaningful’ Human Work Only

Although artificial intelligence has shown that it is capable of carrying out a variety of activities, such as creating a radio script and turning words into lifelike artwork, the question of whether it is eligible to receive a Grammy Award is complicated.

As part of a decision to address the use of artificial intelligence in popular music, the Recording Academy is making various modifications to the Grammy Awards, including a rule stating that “only human creators” are eligible to receive the award.

While songs that feature AI-generated components are still eligible for nomination, there must be evidence of a significant contribution from a human being, and only humans are permitted to submit their work for consideration for the award.

According to Harvey Mason Jr., the CEO of the Recording Academy, to Grammy.com,”If there’s an AI voice singing the song or AI instrumentation, we’ll consider it. But in a songwriting-based category, it has to have been written mostly by a human.”

Mason believes that the impact of AI on the music industry will be huge and unmistakable and that the Grammy Awards must not underestimate its potential. Rather, they should address any difficulties or questions about AI in advance to guarantee that the industry is ready to embrace the changes that AI will bring.

“How can we adapt to accommodate? How can we set guardrails and standards?” “There  are a lot of things that need to be addressed around AI as it relates to our industry,” Mason stated.

The music industry is not the only one dealing with the possibility of a future in which AI will play a larger role. Lawyers in the legal profession are assessing the benefits and downsides of AI by citing court judgments. At the same time, the U.S. The Copyright Office has amended its procedures for submitting AI-assisted creative works for copyright appraisal.
