Immutable’s zkEVM: Fuelling Fee-less Web3 Gaming

Immutable’s highly-anticipated zero-knowledge proof scaling solution, zkEVM, stands to eliminate frustrating gas fees for gamers when launched in early 2024 – a major leap towards mainstream adoption of Web3 games.

On most blockchain protocols like Ethereum, users must pay small gas fees to compensate the network validators who process each transaction. However, these fees create immense friction for conventional gamers accustomed to seamless free-to-play experiences. This gas fee hurdle has been widely cited as a key factor limiting player uptake across Web3 games so far.

Immutable’s breakthrough zkEVM technology will enable game developers building on their platform to sponsor all gas costs associated with their Immutable Passport users playing the game. By absorbing these network fees, studios can provide users with frictionless, familiar game experiences that feel no different than traditional mobile or web games.

While paying down fees may sound expensive up front, Immutable estimates average costs of $500-$1000 monthly to cover 100,000 active users. When viewed as infrastructure expenses akin to server hosting charges, paying gas is feasible for mid-size studios. Sponsorship also unlocks far greater user adoption and in-game revenues.

Come 2024, over 20 announced studio partners, including major players like GameStop, Kongregate, and iLogos, will leverage Immutable’s zkEVM to remove gas fees entirely. This will allow their titles to onboard gamers seamlessly, incentivizing player ownership of rare blockchain-based items and deeper ecosystem loyalty over time.

By eliminating a massive UX hurdle, zkEVM can make the blockchain layer nearly invisible. Paired with Ethereum’s security, this fuel to ignite the Web3 gaming revolution.
