Twitter’s recent unveiling of an “X” logo to replace its iconic bird symbol has proven unpopular with some users. However, software developer Cygaar has created a Google Chrome extension that allows people to revert back to the classic Twitter bird logo if they find the new “X” branding aesthetically displeasing. By installing this browser add-on, dissatisfied Twitter users can choose to keep the familiar original bird logo rather than adopt the controversial new “X” icon that was introduced as part of the company’s major rebranding effort. For those struggling to embrace Twitter’s rapid pace of changes, this extension provides a way to restore one small part of the old Twitter experience.
Software developer Cygaar demonstrated in a tutorial video how his Google Chrome extension can instantly revert Twitter’s new “X” branding back to the classic bird logo with a simple page refresh. To utilize this feature, users just need to install the extension on their Chrome browser directly from Cygaar’s Github page.
As Cygaar states in the extension’s description, “Don’t like the Twitter rebrand to X.com? Neither did I, so I made this Chrome extension that lets you revert x-branding back to the beloved bird.” In this way, Twitter users who dislike the controversial “X” rebranding can leverage this straightforward browser add-on to effortlessly bring back the nostalgic original Twitter bird icon they know and love.
After purchasing Twitter last year, billionaire Elon Musk has implemented various changes to the company and its social media platform. Most recently, Twitter was rebranded as X.com in line with Musk’s vision to transform it into an all-encompassing “everything app.” Since acquiring Twitter, the Tesla CEO and wealthiest person in the world has overseen a series of adjustments to the service as he puts his stamp on the influential communication network. The renaming to X.com represents Musk’s latest move to revamp Twitter from its roots as a microblogging site into a broader digital ecosystem.
Elon Musk aims to transform Twitter into a “WeChat for the West” – a comprehensive digital platform for messaging, social media, transportation, payments and more. Aligning with this vision, Twitter is reportedly developing support for cryptocurrency transactions. However, it remains uncertain whether Twitter’s user base desires this degree of platform expansion.
According to software developer Cygaar, creator of the extension to revert Twitter’s branding to its original bird logo, he may eventually remove the add-on from Github if it does not gain sufficient popularity. As Cygaar stated, “This was made purely for fun. I probably won’t maintain this long term unless there is significant demand.” So while Musk pushes Twitter toward becoming an all-encompassing “everything app,” the desire for this level of functionality among Twitter’s core user base is still an open question. Cygaar’s extension rollback demonstrates some resistance to the changes enacted under Musk’s ownership so far.
