Japanese tech giant Casio is taking its popular G-Shock watch brand into the metaverse through a new blockchain initiative called Virtual G-Shock. Teaming up with Polygon Labs, Casio is launching a community co-creation program to design virtual G-Shock watches.
The first part of the initiative involves distributing 15,000 free NFTs called G-Shock Creator Passes. Holders of the NFTs get access to a Discord channel where they can participate in a contest to make variant designs for the passes. The winning design will be chosen by a community vote.
Casio will start giving out the free NFTs this month through its website. There will be an initial claim period for existing Casio ID holders from September 23-26, followed by a public mint from September 26-29. The NFTs will be minted on Polygon, an Ethereumscaling solution.
Casio hopes to use this NFT-centered initiative to introduce the G-Shock brand, which has sold over 100 million units since 1983, to new audiences in the metaverse and Web3 spaces. The co-creation program aims to get the community involved in developing virtual G-Shock watches.
As Takahashi Oh, a senior Casio executive, explained, “We want to realize a virtual world where avatars wear G-Shock watches, just like in the real world. We plan to cultivate virtual fans through this co-creation project to help build the future of Virtual G-Shock.”
Other brands like Lacoste and Tommy Hilfiger have also recently launched Web3 loyalty programs involving co-creation. Polygon has attracted major brands like Nike, Adidas, and Starbucks to build blockchain apps.
