Blockchain Meme: Bee Movie Script Flies on Ethereum After Upgrade

In a playful nod to a long-running crypto meme, an Ethereum developer took advantage of the network’s recent Dencun upgrade to upload the entire script of the 2007 animated film “Bee Movie” to the Ethereum blockchain mainnet.

The Dencun upgrade introduced “blobs” – a new feature designed to significantly reduce transaction costs on Ethereum’s layer-2 networks by allowing temporary data storage during transaction execution.

Mere minutes after the upgrade went live, developer Dan Cline claimed to be the first to successfully upload the full Bee Movie script, costing him just $13.88 in fees. This feat was made possible by the cost-saving benefits of the new blob functionality.

Uploading the Bee Movie script has become a tongue-in-cheek tradition among blockchain developers, who often race to mint the script on newly launched networks and blockchain functions. The trend emerged from a broader Bee Movie meme culture that involves sharing the film’s script across various online platforms.

While Cline’s upload may seem like a mere jest, it serves as a tangible demonstration of the Dencun upgrade’s potential to make the Ethereum network more cost-effective and accessible for a wide range of applications as layer-2 networks integrate the new blobs feature.

However, the Bee Movie script’s time on the Ethereum blockchain is limited, as blobs are automatically pruned after around 18 days to allow layer-2 networks to retrieve the stored data.
