Telegram Shares 50% Ad Revenue via TON Blockchain

Telegram plans to share 50% of advertising revenue with channel creators beginning March 2023, using its TON blockchain network and native token Toncoin (TON) to facilitate direct crypto transfers. Founder Pavel Durov said revenue splitting aims to incentivize more quality community growth and content production within Telegram through aligned compensation.

Only 10% of current Telegram traffic sees monetization, presenting an opportunity to reward loyal users. Toncoin spiked over 20% on news it will power frictionless ad payouts. TON boasts industry-leading throughput above 100,000 transactions per second, ensuring a smooth payment experience.

Durov suggested this “virtuous circle” where creators either cash out profits or re-invest funds into improving channels. Telegram follows some social networks enacting creator incentive programs but is still among the first to implement on-chain revenue sharing. Early reception indicates a strong appetite among users to participate in embedded token-based economics.

If successful, TON could demonstrate a proven model of blended social community engagement and crypto utility at scale – where daily behaviors intersect with blockchain value creation and transfer.
