Google has filed a lawsuit against individuals accused of defrauding over 100,000 people globally through counterfeit cryptocurrency apps on the Google Play store. The lawsuit aims to combat crypto-related scams and set a legal precedent for user protection.
The defendants allegedly posted at least 87 fake investment and crypto exchange apps, providing false information about their identities and the nature of the apps. Users were reportedly unable to withdraw funds and were misled into paying additional fees.
In response, Google has enhanced its cybersecurity measures and seeks damages and a permanent injunction to bar the defendants from accessing its services, as part of its efforts to protect users and ensure platform integrity amid growing online scams.
