Dogecoin’s Runestones: A Free Airdrop Inspired by Bitcoin Ordinals

The Dogecoin community has taken a page from the Bitcoin Ordinals playbook, offering a free airdrop of their own “Doge Runestone” NFTs. The initiative, organized by Robo AI, gave away a total of 30,272 Doginals (Dogecoin’s version of Ordinals) to wallets that held at least one Doginal from a curated list of collections.

The Doge Runestones, inspired by the buzzy Runestone airdrop on the Bitcoin network last month, are now trading at a floor price of 185 DOGE, or around $32, with a 24-hour trading volume of over $2,000 on the Ordinals Wallet marketplace.

Dogecoin, a fork of a fork of Bitcoin, has had its own Ordinals-like protocol since February 2023, a month after the launch of Bitcoin Ordinals. This has opened up the possibility for the introduction of the DRC-20 token standard, which has already seen the creation of 149 Doginal collections and nearly 68,000 DRC-20 tokens with a combined market capitalization of $120 million.

The Doge Runestone airdrop, while generating some buzz in the Dogecoin community, has not had a significant impact on the price of DOGE, which is currently trading at $0.1718 – down 2% in the past day and 20% on the week.

The Dogecoin blockchain has also seen the inscription of the classic 1993 shooter game Doom as a Doginal, further solidifying the meme-coin’s place in the world of blockchain-based video game adaptations.
