False rumors about Gary Gensler, the chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, resigning have been going around, and the most recent one involved a new website that used information generated by artificial intelligence.
The SEC chair reportedly “submitted his resignation following an internal investigation,” according to a news report that surfaced on the website “thecryptoalert.com” on July 1. The source of the report was an unnamed official.
Cointelegraph discovered that the text of the article scored highly on the independent AI detector ZeroGPT, scoring 96.8%, indicating a high level of AI text production.
There are just 17 postings on the website overall, the first of which was published on June 22. This gives the impression that it is a very new site. Along with appearing to heavily rely on AI, the majority of these articles scored around 70% on ZeroGPT.
In addition to the majority of the material being artificial intelligence (AI) generated, the ownership of the domain name “thecryptoalert.com” was updated at 4:30 p.m. on June 24, according to a search on the internet archive Wayback Machine.
However, the content was shared on Twitter by a number of accounts. With 1.4 million views at the time of publication, the @whalechart account’s post was the one with the most views on the subject.
The tweet said, “Breaking: Anonymous official at the SEC has reportedly disclosed that chairman Gary Gensler is going to resign following an internal investigation.“
In response to the false information, Fox Business Network reporter Charles Gasparino, who reportedly heard back from the SEC, tweeted on July 3, “Breaking: As expected, @SECGov PR says @GaryGensler is not resigning.”
On April 20, rumors that Gensler was about to be “fired” went around from unknown sources. It has been widely reported that Gensler will be leaving his position.
The “SEC Stabilization Act” was a new bill that American legislators brought to the House of Representatives on June 12. Gensler was described as a “tyrannical Chairman” in one of its key sections, which aimed to have him fired.
