For those who were anticipating playing Diablo IV over the course of this weekend, their plans may have been thwarted by an individual or group determined to disrupt such intentions. From at least the early hours of Sunday morning, Blizzard’s Battle.net online service was the object of an apparent Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack, rendering it challenging, if not impossible, to access games such as Diablo IV, World of Warcraft, and other Blizzard titles. Eventually, the company was able to rectify the situation. Initially, Blizzard’s customer support account tweeted that it was investigating an authentication issue, but later updated the public by stating, “We continue to actively monitor an ongoing DDoS attack which is affecting latency/connections to our games.”
As of 12:30 PM ET, the problem remained unresolved. A notification is displayed when launching Battle.net on PC, stating that “We are currently experiencing a DDoS attack, which may result in high latency and disconnections for some players,” and that “We are actively working to mitigate this issue.” After briefly being able to play Diablo IV, I was subsequently disconnected. According to some players on Reddit, they were unable to access Blizzard’s latest game for at least 10 to 12 hours. This occurrence will likely prompt renewed requests for Blizzard to incorporate an offline mode into Diablo IV.
An update at 1:36 PM ET reveals that as of 1:18 PM ET, Blizzard has declared that the DDoS attacks encountered earlier in the day have ceased. If players are still unable to connect, the company advises following the troubleshooting guidelines provided on its website.
