GoFundMe has canceled a crowdfunding campaign aimed at raising legal fees for Tornado Cash co-founder Roman Storm and developer Alexey Pertsev.
In January, Storm asked supporters to donate funds to fight legal charges from U.S. authorities that Tornado Cash enabled sanctions evasion.
While the fundraiser began collecting donations, on February 14th GoFundMe shut it down, citing a violation of their terms that prohibit campaigns that could expose the platform to liability.
Donors like Ryan Adams of Bankless Ventures, who had pledged $10,000, had their contributions refunded. Adams plans to resend his donation to Storm using cryptocurrency.
The canceled GoFundMe had raised $30,000 of the $1.5 million goal. Tornado Cash is now fundraising on the crypto platform JuiceBox, which has collected 316.75 Ether so far.
The Tornado Cash team faces charges including money laundering conspiracy but maintains innocence. Storm is out on $2 million bail with travel restrictions as the legal battle continues.
