Artificial intelligence was front and center at Google’s annual fall product event this week. The tech giant unveiled new Pixel smartphones powered by AI-enhanced processors, along with a revamped digital assistant called Assistant with Bard that aims to be a next-generation ChatGPT.
Google highlighted its new Tensor G3 chip that will power the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro smartphones. The third-generation tensor processing unit was designed by Google specifically to accelerate AI tasks, providing more personalized and contextual help across apps.
“The Tensor G3 allows us to make Pixel even more helpful, personal, and intelligent,” said Peter Prunuske, Google’s VP of Product Management for Pixel.
But the star of the show was the preview of Assistant with Bard, which combines Google’s current digital assistant with new generative AI capabilities. Users will be able to have natural conversations with Bard, asking it questions and getting detailed responses powered by Google’s LaMDA technology.
“Bard aims to combine the breadth of the world’s knowledge with the power, intelligence, and creativity of our large language models,” said Google CEO Sundar Pichai. “It draws on information from the web to provide fresh, high-quality responses.”
The integration of more advanced AI comes as Google faces increased scrutiny around its dominance in search and digital ads. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently testified that Google controls access and data in a way that makes competition difficult.
Google is racing against competitors like Microsoft, which just added the powerful GPT-4 model into Bing Search and Edge. Earlier this year, Google researchers published concerns that LaMDA could appear sentient.
The new Pixel phones will get first access to Bard this winter. Google plans to eventually bring these AI capabilities to billions of devices worldwide, powering its vision of an “AI-first” future.
