Greece Forms AI Committee To Craft National Strategy

The Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, has announced the formation of an advisory committee tasked with crafting a national artificial intelligence (AI) strategy.

The committee consists of professionals across technology, ethics, law, and science, including Greek researchers and scientists worldwide. It will be led by MIT computer science professor Constantinos Daskalakis.

According to Mitsotakis, organizing Greece’s adoption of AI is crucial as the technology becomes an everyday reality. The commission will provide policy recommendations and guidelines for a long-term national AI approach.

Central aims are assessing AI’s impact on the economy and society, improving productivity and innovation, and strengthening infrastructure. The strategy will help align Greece with impending EU regulations on AI.

Daskalakis stated the committee will also enable Greece to participate in international AI organizations and initiatives.

The creation of the advisory body signifies Greece prioritizing development of a cohesive national framework as AI proliferation accelerates globally. The multidisciplinary expertise on the commission will help ensure a balanced strategy.
