Marathon Mines Bitcoin Using Landfill Methane in Utah

oinbase-launches-bitcoin-and-ethereum-futures-for-us-traders">Bitcoin mining company Marathon Digital has started a pilot project mining BTC using power generated from methane gas captured at a Utah landfill. The 280-kW off-grid project partners Marathon with startup Nodal Power.

Marathon CEO Fred Thiel said the initiative aims to validate capturing landfill methane, converting it to electricity, and powering bitcoin miners. If successful, Marathon hopes to expand the green, off-grid mining model to more landfills.

The project aligns with bitcoin miners seeking renewable energy sources like hydropower and solar. Methane is more damaging than CO2, so capturing it prevents emissions. Marathon released a report finding landfill-based crypto mining is advantageous and sustainable.

The Utah project is a small start, but using landfill methane could enable scaled-up, low-impact bitcoin mining. Marathon continues pursuing greener mining solutions while operating large facilities like its 200-MW immersion-cooled data center in Abu Dhabi.
