A tweet from frequent Spaces host Mario Nawfal on the upcoming debut of Threads, Meta’s Twitter rival platform, sparked the exchange. Elon Musk responds, “I’m up for a cage match if he is lol.”
In response to Musk’s Tweet, Zuckerberg’s reaction on Instagram was simply, “Send Me Location.”
Zuckerberg, 39, has been practicing MMA and has lately triumphed in Jiu-Jitsu competitions. The Facebook founder wasn’t kidding, according to a Meta spokesperson, and his Instagram response “speaks for itself.”
After tweeting “Vegas Octagon” in response to the Verge’s allegation, Musk said, “I have this great move that I call ‘The Walrus’, where I just lie on top of my opponent and do nothing.”
Musk, 51, added in another tweet, “I almost never work out, except for picking up my kids and throwing them in the air.”
Musk is currently the richest person in the world, with an estimated net worth of $236.2 billion. At $99.9 billion, Zuckerberg is currently the 10th richest person in the world, according to estimates of wealth.
The striking conflict between the two billionaires is the result of rumors that Meta’s Instagram is creating a Twitter rival code-named Project 92, or P92. In response to a tweet about Meta’s plan on Wednesday, Musk wrote, “I’m sure Earth can’t wait to be exclusively under Zuck’s thumb with no other options.” This was in reaction to a story about the purported Twitter clone.
P92’s existence was first disclosed in March when Meta confirmed that it was investigating a standalone decentralized social network for exchanging text updates that would be compatible with ActivityPub, the decentralized protocol used by Mastodon. P92 will incorporate Instagram data, even for non-users, and could go under the name “Threads,” with prominent users like Oprah Winfrey and the Dalai Lama being courted. Given that Instagram’s user base is eight times larger than that of Twitter, Threads may be a serious competitor. In an internal meeting, Meta’s Chief Product Officer, Chris Cox, reportedly said that Threads will provide a “sanely run” alternative for creators and the public.
