The UK government has revealed plans to hold a worldwide summit on the safety of artificial intelligence (AI) later this year, with the attendance of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and US President Joe Biden, as announced on June 8, 2021. The topic of AI will be discussed during their meeting on the same day.

As per the statement released by the British government, the upcoming summit will deliberate on potential hazards associated with artificial intelligence (AI), including frontier systems, and explore effective measures that can be taken through synchronized international efforts to minimize these risks. However, the government has not yet announced a specific date for the summit. 

According to officials from both the UK and the US, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and President Joe Biden are scheduled to hold their fourth meeting in as many months on Thursday, during which they will endeavor to align their strategies on crucial and developing technologies, with a focus on reinforcing their economic stability.

As per the statement released by the government, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had intended to conduct extensive discussions with President Joe Biden on the bilateral relations between the UK and the US, with a focus on enhancing their economic stability and reinforcing their “collective leadership in upcoming technologies”.

Several governments, including China, are currently exploring ways to mitigate the potential risks associated with the burgeoning field of emerging technology, which has witnessed a surge in investment and consumer demand, particularly after OpenAI’s ChatGPT release. According to billionaire Elon Musk, who met with Chinese officials during his recent visit, the Chinese government is also seeking to establish regulations for artificial intelligence. Regulators worldwide have been working to develop guidelines for the use of generative AI, which has been compared to the advent of the internet in terms of its impact. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is currently on a visit to the United States and is scheduled to meet with President Joe Biden at the White House on Thursday.
