Ukraine Confiscates $1.5 Million in Crypto from Former Top Official

Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau has seized $1.5 million worth of cryptocurrency from a former high-ranking state official accused of corruption.

The assets seized included 6.9 BTC, 1.2 million USDT, and 331 TRX from ex-chief of the Special Communications Service, Yury Shchigol.

Shchigol allegedly misappropriated government money by overpaying preferred vendors for services and pocketing the difference.

The case reflects broader crypto adoption in Ukraine, sometimes to facilitate graft. Last year officials reported combined Bitcoin holdings of $2.7 billion.

As cryptocurrency penetrates Ukraine’s political system, seizure of illegitimate digital asset gains could discourage misconduct. But oversight is still lacking on officials’ crypto wealth.
