The Wormhole appchain achieves interoperability across blockchains by integrating with the Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol. This allows users to bridge assets to any Cosmos-based appchain without extra fees.
Appchains are specialized blockchains built on existing networks or made specifically for a particular app or organization.
The launch of this new Wormhole appchain aims to improve accessibility in the Cosmos ecosystem. It simplifies the process of integrating assets from major blockchains like Ethereum and Solana into the Cosmos network and various other chains.
The new blockchain introduced by Wormhole is called Gateway. It is designed to simplify the process for developers and users to add tokens to any Cosmos-based chain. According to Wormhole’s announcement, Gateway’s main goal is to promote growth in Cosmos by driving liquidity and enabling smooth token integration.
Rather than building on existing chains like Ethereum, developers can now create customized blockchains for specific apps that can be continuously upgraded to meet user needs.
In 2022, Wormhole first integrated with the Cosmos-based chain Injective. But with the launch of Gateway, Wormhole’s reach now extends across the entire ecosystem of Cosmos appchains. Overall, this launch aims to foster greater interconnectivity and accessibility across the expanding Cosmos network.
The new Wormhole Gateway aims to benefit two main types of users. First are Cosmos developers who want easy onboarding of users and liquidity from other chains like Ethereum and Solana. Second are general users looking to bridge assets to or from Cosmos.
The Gateway will empower both sets of users to seamlessly transfer assets across different Cosmos chains. While users won’t directly interact with the chain interface, the background technology efficiently handles cross-chain transfers.
The Gateway prioritizes transaction transparency and security, enhancing protection for Wormhole messages. This improves transparency and sovereignty over all Wormhole activities.
The system lets an entity bridge a token to any Cosmos chain via the Gateway. The asset gets locked, and a new ICS-20 token is created on the Gateway per inter-chain standards that facilitate Cosmos interoperability.
This new token then gets sent to the destination chain using IBC. Wormhole chose the Cosmos SDK for its IBC light clients, further securing and streamlining Wormhole operations.
Integrating the Gateway into Cosmos just requires a simple IBC connection. It does not impose extra fees, making it a cost-effective bridging solution for users.
