Cardano Founder Praises New Mithril Paper Improving Sync Speed

Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson recently shared his enthusiasm regarding a new paper published on Mithril, a scaling solution designed to improve sync speeds for the Cardano network.

Mithril utilizes a stake-based signature scheme allowing for lightweight stake leveraging. The goal is to boost node efficiency and reduce sync times.

The new paper introduces approximate lower bound arguments (ALBAs) to enable proof of large datasets without full disclosure. This technique can minimize prover effort and shorten proofs for applications needing to validate many signatures without revealing each one.

Researchers demonstrate how ALBAs enable efficient witness extraction in zero-knowledge proofs. By replacing custom builds with an ALBA, proof sizes, and prover computation can be reduced.

Since launching on mainnet in July 2022, over 80 stake pools have adopted Mithril, representing 1.5 billion ADA in stake. Adoption continues growing. Recent improvements also lowered Cardano node sync times to under 20 minutes on consumer laptops.

The new Mithril developments reflect a broader focus on scaling and efficiency for the Cardano ecosystem. As network usage expands, solutions like Mithril aim to maintain decentralization while enabling faster transactions and lower costs.
