By expanding crypto payment options beyond its online portal, Lugano advances municipal adoption goals set out under its Plan B collaboration with Tether.
Citizens and businesses can leverage their preferred mobile wallets to scan invoice QR codes and settle obligations in either Bitcoin or Tether. Crypto payments processor Bitcoin Suisse is providing the technical infrastructure to facilitate the system rollout.
With the move, Lugano joins other Swiss cities like Zug in accepting major cryptocurrencies for tax settlements and other public expenses. The decision reflects widening integration of blockchain technology by municipalities seeking to become crypto hubs.
Bitcoin Suisse, which aids crypto adoption across various Swiss governmental bodies, emphasized that enabling cutting-edge payment solutions offers choice and convenience for both public and private actors.
Between bank trials and city initiatives, Switzerland continues building on its crypto-friendly reputation by unlocking more functionality for digital asset usage. If the Lugano expansion meets success, even more municipalities could follow suit in paving a path for tokenized taxes and treasuries.
